Iaito lengths

What is the right length for my Iaito?

Both a centreboard that is too short and one that is too long will hinder or prevent correct movements. We therefore recommend the following sword lengths as the maximum length.

Experience has shown that a size smaller is optimal for most people, as the table is designed for more advanced exercisers, for whom the pulling movement is slightly different than for less advanced users.

There is an extra column in the table for women. As the belt is traditionally worn higher on women than on men, it makes sense to use a different sword length.

The recommended measurement corresponds to the Japanese way of measuring. This means nagasa from munemachi (edge of the blade on the habaki) to the end of the tip.

In addition to our recommendation, there are also differences in the individual styles. That's why we always recommend asking your local sensei. As you can see, the optimum length can be a very individual issue. However, the table should help with orientation.

Body size Nagasa for men Nagasa for women Nagasa for novices
155 cm 2.35 Shaku (71.2cm) 2.25 Shaku (68.2cm) 1 small each
160 cm 2.40 Shaku (72.7cm) 2.30 Shaku (69.7cm) 1 small each
165 cm 2.45 Shaku (74.2cm) 2.35 Shaku (71.2cm) 1 small each
170 cm 2.50 Shaku (75.8cm) 2.40 Shaku (72.7cm) 1 small each
175 cm 2.55 Shaku (77.3cm) 2.45 Shaku (74.2cm) 1 small each
180 cm 2.60 Shaku (78.8cm) 2.50 Shaku (75.8cm) 1 small each
185 cm 2.65 Shaku (80.3cm) 2.55 Shaku (77.3cm) 1 small each
190 cm 2.70 Shaku (81.8cm) 2.60 Shaku (78.8cm) 1 small each

Our Ryu is one of the cheapest Iaito in our range.

We would like to expressly point out that despite the favourable price, we have the same high-quality blades fitted for you as for the more expensive Iaito!

You can choose the blade length (nagasa) of this training sword from 2.2 to 2.45 Shaku. You can find more information about which length we recommend for you in the table, which you can call up under the "Add to basket" button.

The blade of the Iaito is made of a zinc-aluminium alloy, as is common in Japanese training swords for martial arts such as Iaido.

It has a hamon in the traditional suguha (straight) look. Suguha epitomises the straightness of the samurai and can therefore also be found on many antique swords.

This model has a blade with a deeper fuller (Hi) . This gives the blade a more distinctive sound (tachikaze) when it is moved. A second positive effect is a reduction in weight compared to the normal blade.

The sword handle (tsuka) has a slightly slenderised shape, making the iaito very comfortable to hold.
The winding is made of black Japanese cotton. As is usual with Japanese Iaito, the handle winding (Tsukamaki) is of a very good quality and enables years of training without any significant slippage.

Naturally, real seed is used for the inlays on the handle.

The sword sheath (saya) in black is made of wood. The lacquer finish is Kuroishime (matt black). If you prefer Kuroro (high gloss black), you are welcome to contact us. We also offer a guarantee for the saya, more information can be found below in the text.

The band (sageo) on the scabbard is made of black cotton.

A dragon was chosen as the motif for the blade. In Asian mythology, the dragon (Ryu) symbolises strength and luck. It is the most powerful mythological creature.

Fuchi, Kashira and Menuki made of high-quality copper feature a classic bamboo motif.

You will receive a guarantee promise from us for this sword:
If you wear out the saya or damage it during training, we will not let you down with your sword. We guarantee the availability of replacement material for 10 years from the date of purchase!

Compared to Iaito on the international market, this model is similar in design and quality to the well-known Tozando Iaito.
