Momonari Kabuto (dated ca. 1750), a quite rare piece.
The Momonari Kabuto is made of iron. It is equipped with a high dome, which is reminiscent of the European cabasset in shape. After the arrival of the first Europeans, this kabuto was modelled on their helmets. The shape of European armour was very popular in Japan and was incorporated into traditional items and armour (Hatomune-Dō). Nevertheless, the traditional components of the kabuto were still used and added to the European helmet shape. The additional decoration of the helmets can vary greatly. In general, the helmets are fitted with side protection (Japanese: fukigaeshi), neck protection (Japanese: shikoro), a helmet decoration (Japanese: maedate and wakidate) and a fastening strap (Japanese: shinobi-o-noh) to secure the helmet to the head. Face masks (jap. Menpo) were often worn with this type of helmet. The helmets were often painted in different colours in Japan. This served as decoration, but also to protect the metal of the helmet from the weather[1].

These Kabuto are very expensive but often do not have the quality of our piece.
