Master swords - Nihonto from Japan customised to order

Master sword Nihonto

A dream come true - having Nihonto master swords forged to your own specifications

(Nihonto) by an actual swordsmith in Japan is the dream of many martial artists and fans of the Japanese sword.

With a sword like this, you can use a real sword from Japan with a steel blade in your own training and also support the continued existence of the Japanese art of swordsmithing with an order like this.

The production of such master swords has its advantages. The sword can be forged individually according to your specifications.

In addition to standards such as a specific blade length, details such as the sori can also be specified.

If you decide to have a Japanese sword customised, you will receive a completely new sword that no one other than the blacksmith and the craftsmen involved has ever held in their hands before.

A completely new blade is fresh and unloaded. Of course there are also many beautiful historical master swordsbut these have often been through a lot over the centuries.

On antique swords, for example, the mounting (koshirae) is often relatively loose. This is of course different with a completely new sword!

Like every genuine Nihonto, the new swords are forged in the long tradition of Japanese swordsmiths using traditional methods and the famous Japanese Tamahagane steel.

The techniques for this have been passed down and optimised from generation to generation.

This means you get the accumulated knowledge of centuries united in one sword when you commission a master sword from a Japanese blacksmith.

These are exclusive one-off pieces that do not exist a second time in this form because they are individually and specifically forged for you.

The production of master swords is strictly regulated in Japan and the traditional manufacturing methods require a great deal of time.

The production of a complete Nihonto by a current master smith takes about 6 to 12 months from the order to the finished sword.

Such newly manufactured swords are known as shinsakuto. You can buy or order shinsakuto from us.

The blacksmiths we work with in Japan are honourable masters.

The effort and labour that goes into such a sword makes it a high-quality work of art. A budget of at least 8,000 euros should be available for the production.

Master Fusataro
Master Fusataro from Gifu Prefecture is one of Japan's young and very talented blacksmiths. It can be assumed that his swords will quickly become more expensive or increase in value. The example sword is characterised by a blade in Kobuse technique and a very beautiful Itame Hada. Master Fusataro likes to forge blades with a strong blade back but with a slim blade shape.
These swords are therefore very comfortably weighted and light. This suits many budoka who like to train with a real sword.
Master Matsuba
Master Matsuba is one of the most famous Japanese blacksmiths. Many in Japan are of the opinion that he currently produces the best swords for tameshigiri. Matsuba's swords are not commissioned by Japan Budo directly from the blacksmith himself, but rather through an agent. Matsuba won the Award of Excellence for the best blacksmiths in Japan in 2001.
Master Mitsuhiro (Kanemitsu)
Mitsuhiro (MItsuhiro Kimura, from Kumamoto Prefecture) is a third-generation blacksmith. He is the son of the highly respected blacksmith Kanesada. Kanesada and Mitsuhiro are winners of the Award of Excellence for Japan's best blacksmiths in 2004, and although Mitsuhiro is comparatively young, he is recognised as the outstanding talent of Japanese blacksmiths.
Master Nobuhide
Master Nobuhide ceased his activities in 2004 for reasons of age. We are therefore no longer able to commission new swords. However, it is possible to buy swords that have already been made.
