Why there are so many different training swords for Iaido

For Iaido training, the right training sword is of course an extremely important component.

However, just as each trainee is individual, the sword must also be chosen individually so that everything goes according to plan during Iaido training.

We sell Iaito from Japanthat are convincing in training. We make sure that there is something for everyone. This results in our wide range of products.

To ensure that everything fits 100%ig for you personally, we would like to briefly explain the differences and selection options for our swords.

Design options and differences in Japanese Iaito

Blade length

The blade length is crucial so that the sword can be drawn correctly when practising. Our range includes swords with a blade length of 2.0 to 2.7 Shaku with intermediate steps of 0.05 Shaku. To find out which length is right for you, you are welcome to use our Article about Iaito lengths view.

The lengths given there are for guidance only. If you practise your swordsmanship in a group, it is best to ask the local trainer about the optimum length. Some schools, for example, practise with a slightly shorter blade. This also depends in part on the techniques practised.

Blade weight

The weight of the blade is also an important detail. On the one hand, there are models with a deeper fuller (Hi), an example of which is our To-Ryu modelThis results in a slightly lighter weight than other models. On the other hand, for our freely designed Iaito the option of having the lightest or heaviest possible blade made.

Iaito have a blade made of a zinc-aluminium blade, which is lighter than the steel blade of a real sword. This means that longer training sessions in Iaido training are also possible with these swords.

Deviating from this standard by using a lighter blade makes sense if the joints are to be spared. Deviating from this standard by using a heavier blade may make sense for advanced users, as the sword can then be wielded more like a real katana.

Handle length

There are standard handle lengths that make sense in relation to the blade length. However, people with large hands may find a different handle length more comfortable. Just as with the length of the blade, there are also sword schools in which certain dimensions are desirable for the sword handle.

Design

Different designs on the sword can lead to differences in handling. In addition to the simple question of favour, details such as the positioning of the menuki, choice of blade (tsuba) and the design of the end cap (jidai or higo) have an effect on everyday training.

Colours

The colours on the sword are often roughly determined by the sword school in which you train. When buying a new training sword for Iaido, you should at least use this as a guide and choose the appropriate colours for saya, sageo and ito.

At least the colour of the Sageo Bandes can still be easily changed by subsequent replacement.

Available budget

It's a topic that many people don't like to talk about, but the purchase is largely determined by the budget available.

There is no point in putting together the optimum sword if it cannot be paid for in the end. You are welcome to contact us with your ideas and we will find the optimum sword in our range for your Iaido training within your budget.
