Bokken as a consumable
BokkenThe wooden swords for kenjutsu training are subjected to regular stress during training. Depending on the type of training, this load can be higher or lower.
Bokken were and are therefore more or less a consumable item that was simply replaced at regular intervals. In the article, the names bokken and Bokuto because both mean the same thing.
Change in recent years
In the past this was not a problem, as good quality bokken were available cheaply and in large quantities.
However, the tide has turned in the recent past. Some types of wood are no longer even available in Japan, as we reported in another Article about Bokuto from Japan had already written.
The prices for training swords are also rising. This makes the preservation of wooden swords more important.
Bokuto care as a sustainable alternative
Why does bokken care help?
As we all know, wood is obtained from trees. The tree supplies itself with moisture while its roots are still in the ground. However, as soon as the tree is felled, the wood slowly loses moisture.
Wood care restores moisture to the wood. This makes the wood more resistant and durable.
How are bokken cared for?
Bokken care works in the same way as general wood care. The surface is oiled and the oil is absorbed into the wood. It is sufficient to carry out this process at intervals of several months to keep the wood in good condition.
This counteracts the loss of moisture in the wood described above and also makes the wood more resistant to typical signs of ageing such as discolouration.
