Katana Saya - The scabbard of samurai swords

Katana saya are traditionally made from Magnolia wood (Honoki).

A scabbard is made up of 2 halves, so that both halves can first be adapted exactly to the shape of the blade.

Once the halves have been glued together, the design work begins.

The scabbard is one of the largest visible elements of the sword's mount (koshirae) and therefore has a significant influence on the sword's appearance.

Designs for Katana Saya

There are countless design options. We would like to list just a few that you really need to know before deciding which katana saya to choose. Regardless of this, there are also many other interesting design options.

More designs are available for the products shown above.

Ro - High gloss

Ro is the name for the standard high-gloss lacquered saya. Several layers of lacquer are applied. The name of this lacquer finish is made up of the name for the colour and the term Ro.

Kuroro - Kuro Ro - Kuro means black
Cahro - Cha Ro - Cha means brown
etc.

Ishime - from matt to drop

Ishime is the name for a matt type of lacquering. The appearance can vary greatly depending on the texture.

With a very fine structure, Ishime is comparable to a matt colour.
The somewhat coarser look resembles the surface of a stone.
Really coarse Ishime has a drop-like structure.

As with Ro, the designation is made up of the colour designation and Ishime:
Kuroishime - Kuro Ishime - Kuro means black

Sendan - with rattan winding

Sendan is a special mould in which the sword scabbard is wrapped with rattan bands before the lacquering is applied.

There is Han-Sendan, where the area between Koiguchi and Kurigata and a small section after Kurigata is wrapped.

But there is also the complete saya wrapped in rattan.

Same - Wrapped with ray skin

Same is another special form of scabbard. The material used for the Sword hilt is used as a base, as a decoration for saya.

Koiguchi and Kojiri

Kojiro and Koiguchi can be found at both ends of the scabbard.

Koiguchi means carp mouth and is the one with the opening. As the element can also be edged with horn, it can also be called tsunoguchi.

Kojiri is the end cap on the other side.

Kurigata

Kurigata is an eyelet to which the ribbon (sageo) is attached.

This element can also be adorned with decorative elements (shito domes).

Sageo

Sageo is the band on the scabbard.
