Centreboard stand

Ever since samurai swords were invented, the question of how to store them has arisen. There are suitable sword stands for this purpose.

Here you will find a selection of holders on which you can place your katana, iaito and bokken.

Sword stand - Historically significant

Even if it is just a simple accessory, choosing the right sword stand is essential for every samurai.

And so there are numerous variations of suitable storage options in the rich history of the samurai sword.

Over the centuries, everything imaginable has been used as a sword stand for the prized and high-quality swords such as tachi and katana, from the simple stand on a holder made of deer antlers to the luxury version decorated with artistic paintings.

Wood was the most widely used material. The historical holders in Japan usually had 3 shelves. 2 for a daisho (set of katana and wakizashi) and a 3rd shelf for a tanto.

These antique sword holders often also had an additional compartment for sword accessories such as sword care utensils or tsuba for changing.

Stand for swords in Japanese

In the Japanese language, the mounts for samurai swords are usually called Katana Kake which means something like sword holder.

How are they designed today?

The antique specimens described above are still available on the market and can cost several hundred, sometimes even thousands of euros.

To produce sword stands today to the artistic standard of the old examples, the costs would be about the same as for the historical models.

For this reason, simple wooden models are generally used today to store your own training swords appropriately.
