Iaito lengths and Hamon selection

What is the right length for my Iaito?

Both a centreboard that is too short and one that is too long will hinder or prevent correct movements. We therefore recommend the following sword lengths as the maximum length.

Experience has shown that a size smaller is optimal for most people, as the table is designed for more advanced exercisers, for whom the pulling movement is slightly different than for less advanced users.

There is an extra column in the table for women. As the belt is traditionally worn higher on women than on men, it makes sense to use a different sword length.

The recommended measurement corresponds to the Japanese way of measuring. This means nagasa from munemachi (edge of the blade on the habaki) to the end of the tip.

In addition to our recommendation, there are also differences in the individual styles. That's why we always recommend asking your local sensei. As you can see, the optimum length can be a very individual issue. However, the table should help with orientation.

Body size Nagasa for men Nagasa for women Nagasa for novices
155 cm 2.35 Shaku (71.2cm) 2.25 Shaku (68.2cm) 1 small each
160 cm 2.40 Shaku (72.7cm) 2.30 Shaku (69.7cm) 1 small each
165 cm 2.45 Shaku (74.2cm) 2.35 Shaku (71.2cm) 1 small each
170 cm 2.50 Shaku (75.8cm) 2.40 Shaku (72.7cm) 1 small each
175 cm 2.55 Shaku (77.3cm) 2.45 Shaku (74.2cm) 1 small each
180 cm 2.60 Shaku (78.8cm) 2.50 Shaku (75.8cm) 1 small each
185 cm 2.65 Shaku (80.3cm) 2.55 Shaku (77.3cm) 1 small each
190 cm 2.70 Shaku (81.8cm) 2.60 Shaku (78.8cm) 1 small each

What do the Hamon names mean?

Brief explanation of the hamon variations you can choose from. Not all hamon are available for all swords. You can see the selection for the sword on the respective product page.

Suguha

A straight line. The most common pattern because the straight line goes well with the straightness of the samurai.

Notaries

Large waves. Another popular motif because the large waves create a very calm pattern.

Midare

A pattern with uneven, short waves and points.

Gunome

Relatively even short waves.

Doran

A more or less uneven pattern of larger waves and indentations.

Doran double line

The Doran pattern in a special version with two lines combined with each other. It looks much more sophisticated than the simple version. However, the realisation is also comparatively complex.

Japanese Iaito completely customised to your wishes

Owning an Iaito is something special because you train regularly with your personal sword and thereby form a bond with it.

After a few years you know every detail of your sword and training with any other sword feels strange. So it's worth making no compromises and you can order a completely personalised Iaito from us, made exclusively for you in Japan.

The Iaito has a long tradition as a training sword and is the standard for Iai training in all Japanese sword martial arts.# These are genuine Iaito from Japan. In accordance with the weapons laws there, the training swords have a blade made of a zinc-aluminium alloy.

With us you have 20 setting options for the composition of your personal training sword!
Starting with the characteristics of the blade, such as the choice of length (nagasa) and the design of the hollow (hi). About the design of the sword handle (Tsuka) and of course the choice of fittings (Tsuba, Menuki, etc...)

This allows you to freely design your new Iaito and make it your own personal one-off.
