Tsuba Nagasaki Shippo natural motif with NBTHK Hozon papers

Well preserved Nagasaki Shippo Tsuba from the Edo period.

Shippo is a special type/process in which glass enamel is applied to metal objects.

This technique flourished for many export goods, especially in the trading city of Nagasaki, which was known for its exchanges with Western traders in the late Edo period.

The technique allows more colourful images to be created than is the case with pure metal tsuba. This is what makes this tsuba so special. The cross pattern that can be seen on this tsuba is also characteristic.

A nature scene with a maple tree and a stag serves as a template for the design.

This specimen has Hozon papers from the NBTHK, in which the status of this tsuba as worthy of preservation was established.
