KUNISUKE (国助), 2nd gen., Kanbun (寛文, 1661-1673), Settsu – “Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke” (河内守国助), “Kobayashi Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke” (小林河内守国助), real name Kobayashi Hachirō´emon (小林八郎右衛門), son of the 1st gen. Kunisuke, he signed in early years with Kunitoyo (国豊), he is also called Naka-Kawachi (中河内, lit. “middle Kawachi”), we know blades from the Keian (慶安, 1648-1652) to the Genroku era (元禄, 1688-1704), he oriented more towards the supposed origins of his father which were the Bizen or Ishidō styles and is therefor also referred to as “shintō-Ichimonji,” he died in the eighth month of the eleventh year of Genroku (1698), his posthumous Buddhist name is Jōyō (浄耀), there exists a blade with the date signature of the first year of Keian (1648), that means he was active more than 50 years, he made mostly katana and wakizashi, tantō are rare, the jigane is a fine ko-itame which almost tends to muji which is mixed with fine mokume, some blades also have a coarser mokume and show a tendency to masame, his strong point was a kobushigata-chōji in nioi-deki but he also tempered a suguha, in young years he applied also an ō-midare in ko-nie-deki, between the midare elements we see often small tama and sometimes also saka-ashi occur, the hamon starts mostly with a long sugu-yakidashi and drops at the yokote to a suguha, this suguha turns back in a ko-maru-kaeri which runs parallel to the mune over a certain distance, the tang can taper from the central area downwards and resembles so the characteristical nakago of Muramasa (村正), the tip is kata-yamagata, the yasurime are sujikai or ō-sujikai but do not start with keshō, the signature is somewhat larger and thicker than at the 1st gen., jō-saku
